UAE arrests al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist cell

DUBAI, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates security authorities have busted an al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist cell plotting attacks against the Gulf state, official WAM news agency reported Thursday.

The cell, comprising seven members of different Arab nationalities, was also recruiting people to "promote the work of al-Qaida" besides funding the group to help expand its presence in the region, WAM said, quoting an official source.

The UAE state security prosecution will launch a probe into the case and the cell members will stand trial after the investigation is done, the source said.


U.S. faces difficult situation with rising al-Qaida group in Syria: report

DAMASCUS, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Washington is facing a difficult situation after the Iraqi wing of al-Qaida network docked with the Nusra Front radical group in Syria, a Syrian state-run paper said Thursday.

"After the futile efforts to unite the so-called Syrian opposition and many compromises that resulted in declaring readiness to form an interim government; the experts, Pentagon men, and the CIA find themselves in front of the challenge of administrating bloody conflicts," the al-Baath paper editorialized. Al-Qaida assassinates Yemeni anti-terrorism officer

SANAA, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Al-Qaida militants killed a Yemeni counter-terrorism officer in Yemen's southern province of Hadramout late Saturday, an Interior Ministry official told Xinhua on Sunday.

"Two al-Qaida gunmen on a motorbike shot dead assistant director of the criminal investigations Abdel Kader Hazza, who is also in charge of a counter-terrorism unit in Shiher town of Hadramout," the official said on condition of anonymity. Full story
