PHNOM PENH, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Road accidents had killed 66 Cambodian people and injured 305 others during the celebration of the traditional Khmer New Year on April 13-17, police said Wednesday.

A total of 148 road accidents happened nationwide during this year's holiday period, down 10 percent compared with 165 cases during the New Year holiday period last year, Gen. Him Yan, chief of the Interior Ministry's traffic and public order department, told Xinhua over telephone.

He said the number of the deaths during this year's holiday period was 66, up 37 percent from 48 deaths during the same period last year, while the number of the injured was 305, down 11 percent from 344.

"Seventy-seven percent of the accidents were involved with motorcycles," he said, adding that over-sped driving, alcohol driving and reckless driving were the main causes of the accidents.

Road accidents killed at least 1,894 people in Cambodia in the whole year of 2012, costing the country about 300 million U.S. dollars, according to the Ministry of Public Work and Transport.
