CHICAGO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Sales of existing homes in the nine-county Chicago area, the U.S. state of Illinois, totaled 5, 935 units last month, up 20.2 percent year on year.

The median price rose 3.7 percent year on year to 140,000 dollars in February, which remained the same as in January, said Thursday's Chicago Tribune, quoting the Illinois Association of Realtors.

Compared with a year ago, home buyers have fewer properties to choose from. In some counties, the number of available properties is even down by more than 40 percent.

Within the city of Chicago, 1,378 properties changed hands in February, a rise of 10.2 percent year on year, while the median price surged by 12.9 percent to hit 158,000 dollars. Home sales in the city of Chicago in the first two months of the year went up by 21.8 percent from the same period of last year.
