LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Four Afghans were killed and seven others sustained injuries as protestors clashed with police in Musa Qala district of Helmand province 555 km south of capital Kabul on Wednesday, spokesman for provincial administration Ahmad Zirak said.
"A large number of villagers came to streets in Musa Qala district this morning to register their protest over the alleged desecration of Muslim holy book the Quran by a local police and when police tried to control the situation some pro-Taliban elements from among the protestors opened fire killing four civilians and injuring seven others including five civilians and two police constables," Zirak told Xinhua.
He also stressed that the demonstrators had been incited by pro- Taliban elements to take the law in their hands and create law and order problems. Police have arrested one person in this regard, Zirak said, adding police dispersed the demonstrators.
Taliban militants fighting the government have yet to make comment.
