ISTANBUL, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Syrian opposition groups met in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Monday to form an interim government, with 12 candidates running for prime minister.
With the participation of 63 key members of Syrian opposition groups, the meeting was chaired by Ahmad Mouaz Al-Khatib Al-Hasani, President of the National Coalition for Opposition Forces and the Syrian Revolution.
The candidates were nominated by the General Assembly of the Syrian National Coalition within the agreed upon parameters after consultation with Syrian opposition forces and the revolutionary movement.
The 12 candidates are mostly exile-based technocrats, although two of the nominees live in government-controlled areas.
Khaled Salih, director of the media office and member of the executive board in Syrian National Council, told Xinhua that the candidates are from different groups and parties of the opposition.
The 72 members of the coalition's general assembly are eligible to vote.
It is the group's most serious effort to form an interim cabinet since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al- Assad started two years ago.
A recent UN tally placed the overall death toll of Syria's two- year conflict at more than 70,000.
WASHINGTON, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The United States on Friday allowed its citizens to transfer funds and offer other services to the Syrian opposition.
The Department of Treasury issued a general license authorizing "export, re-export, sell, or supply, directly or indirectly" to the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, which Washington recognized in December as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people. ISTANBUL, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian National Coalition ( SNC), the main Syrian opposition group, announced Thursday that it will hold a meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday to elect a "provisional prime minister."
The planned meeting, which is scheduled for March 12-13, is also expected to discuss the formation of an interim government, according to a statement released by the SNC. Full story
