TOKYO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Shinzo Abe vowed Sunday that his party would strive to win election of the Diet's upper house in summer so as to put an end to the current divided parliament, media reported.

Speaking at a LDP's annual meeting, Abe, also Japan's prime minister, said the LDP has not won back public trust, although the party grabbed a big win in lower house election last December.

Natsuo Yamaguchi, chief of the LDP's key ally the New Komeito Party, said in the meeting that the coalition government runs well so far since it was formed last December and the two parties should continue to cooperate in order to secure more than half of seats in the upper house in election.

The two parties together have 325 seats in the 480-seat lower house, while the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan which was ousted in the lower house election remains the largest political force in the upper house.

The LDP also released its policies for the year of 2013 aimed at speeding up reconstruction in the northeast area, revitalizing economy, reforming education system and protecting the country's territory.

Earlier Sunday, addressing to graduating Self-Defense Forces ( SDF) cadets at the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka in Kanagawa prefecture, Abe said his country will further enhance defense forces to protect its territories.

The prime minister said Japan will strengthen the SDF's capability in southwest region by increasing defense budget and revising defense program.

Japan involved in a series of territorial disputes with its neighboring countries, including South Korea, China and Russia, and its relations with the countries have been scratched due to the spiny issues.
