Albanian convict leads hostage drama in Greek prison

ATHENS, March 17 (Xinhua) -- An Albanian convict who has escaped from Greek prisons twice with helicopters in the past, leads a hostage drama in a prison complex in central Greece this weekend, according to local authorities on Sunday.

Alket Rizaj, serving life imprisonment for murder since 2003, holds at least two prison guards as hostages since Saturday night during his latest attempt to break out from Malandrino prison, Greek police said.

Earlier media reports said that there could be up to six hostages held by Rizaj and his two accomplices who threaten to use a hand grenade they allegedly have.

Police forces have deployed around the prison complex, while experts hold negotiations with the criminals who demand a car to escape.

Rizaj has escaped with helicopter from Korydallos maximum security prison in Piraeus port twice, in June 2006 and in February 2009.

Another well known convict attempted to escape a southern Greece prison complex by helicopter three weeks ago, but was stopped by prison guards who fired and slightly injured him and his accomplices.
