VIENNA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The Austria-based beverage and sports marketing giant Red Bull said on Thursday it had received blackmail threats, with extortionists threatening to contaminate drinks products on Austrian shelves.
The extortionists said they would wipe the lids of the beverage products with sewerage water which would make consumers ill, if they were not paid off.
The threats were made via email and had been going on for a number of weeks before the company decided to make the issue public, ORF reported.
Up to now, only one store in Vienna belonging to a grocery chain was named specifically in the threats, and Red Bull said in a press release that they hoped the matter would be resolved soon.
"We are cooperating closely with the criminal police and share the opinion that we are close to the perpetrators and they will be caught," the company said.
