CAIRO, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) foreign ministers decided on Wednesday to invite the Syrian opposition coalition to take the League seat formerly occupied by Damascus.
At their concluding ministerial meeting presided by Egypt, the pan-Arab body called on the exiled Syrian opposition coalition to form an executive authority to occupy the Syria's seat at the League.
"The Syrian National Coalition will be the representative of Syrian people in the upcoming Arab summit to be held in Doha, Qatar," said the AL statement.
At a joint press conference after the meeting, both AL chief Nabil al-Arabi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr reaffirmed that the Syrian opposition coalition was the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
In response, the Syrian foreign ministry issued a statement Wednesday accusing the AL of further violating its charters by offering a certain Syrian opposition party membership at the body.
