KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Gunshots were heard from a village where an armed Filipino rebel group were holed up in Malaysia's Sabah state, local media reported.
The shots were believed to have been fired by Malaysian security forces after the rebel group failed to heed an ultimatum set by both the Filipino and Malaysian authorities to leave Sabah.
Malaysian police have not confirmed if shots were fired.
Malaysian authorities have been in a standoff for about three weeks with a group of about 180 Filipinos who invaded parts of Sabah's eastern Lahad Datu to reclaim the area as their ancestral territory.
