16 killed, 30 wounded in twin car bombings in Iraq's Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two car bombs ripped off back to back in a Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad on Thursday night, killing at least 16 people and wounding 30 others, a local police source said.

The successive explosions happened in the mainly Shiite- populated Shula district around dinner time -- the first outside a restaurant and the second near a football stadium, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

At least 16 people were killed and 30 more were wounded in the blasts, including policemen, said the source, who initially put the toll at two dead and five injured.

The death toll could possibly rise as some of the wounded were in serious conditions, he added.

Iraqi security forces have rushed to the scene and cordoned off nearby areas.

No one has so far claimed the responsibility for the attacks, though Sunni insurgents were often to blame for suck assaults on Shiite Muslims.
