Kerry says "confident" in Italy solving election stalemate

ROME, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said here on Thursday he was confident that Italy would be able to work out its political gridlock caused by the inclusive outcome of its parliamentary election earlier this week.

The election in Italy was "robust, interesting and challenging," Kerry said in a press conference after an international meeting on Syria when asked whether he had concerns about the current political situation in Italy.

"Almost everyone in Italy wants reform and change," Kerry said, adding that the U.S. would stand ready for necessary support.

Italy's political parties have started negotiations after the center-left coalition won the lower house but failed to win a majority alone in the Senate. It remains rather uncertain whether or how the new government will be formed.

Kerry arrived in Rome on Wednesday in the middle of an 11-day tour of Europe and the Middle East. The talk on Syria was the centerpiece of his first overseas mission since taking office on Feb. 1.
