NEW DELHI, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A trade union leader was killed in northern Indian city Ambala Wednesday in a nationwide strike, reported local media.

Narender Singer, a bus driver, was squatting along with a group of workers near the local bus depot as part of the strike, which greatly affected the normal life in India.

He was hit by a bus when he tried to stop it in the early morning, reported Press Trust of India.

After the incident, the other workers resorted to violence damaging vehicles belonging to the police.

Indian unions started a two-day strike Wednesday to protest high inflation, privatization of public sector and alleged anti- labor policies by the Congress-led government.
