MANAMA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Bahraini police said Tuesday they foiled an Iranian-backed terror plot that aimed to target vital military and civil locations and public figures.

Public Security Chief Major General Tariq Al Hassan said during a press conference that Iranian Abu Nasser provided 80,000 U.S. dollars to a terror cell named "Army of Imam."

Five people suspected of being members of the terror cell were arrested in Bahrain, three in Oman and four others on the run, Hassan said.

According to initial investigations, the arrested people had been recruited by two Bahrainis based in Iran ad trained to use firearms, high explosives, collect intelligence and photograph sensitive sites.

Hassan said the suspects have been referred to the Public Prosecutor to be interrogated.
