WELLINGTON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The New Zealand government Thursday offered funding to help the Solomon Islands' emergency response to Wednesday's magnitude-8 earthquake and tsunami.
Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said New Zealand had made 200,000 NZ dollars (167,294 U.S. dollars) available for humanitarian supplies and support to the Solomon Islands government assessment teams, and would consider further assistance in due course.
"The earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which hit the remote Temotu Province, caused damage to a number of homes, and sadly there are reports that lives have been lost," McCully said in a statement.
"Due to the remoteness of the area it might take some time for the Solomon Islands government and relief agencies to gain a full picture of the damage."
