SYDNEY, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A major 8-magnitude earthquake has hit off the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported on Wednesday.
The quake struck at a depth of 5.8 km at 11:07 a.m. (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) on Wednesday, near the Santa Cruz Islands, which are part of the Solomon Islands nation.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) has issued a tsunami warning for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, Wallis and Futuna, according to AAP.
A tsunami watch has been issued for other nations in the South Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand and Indonesia.
