DAMASCUS, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian authorities helped set free three foreigners who had been kidnapped last December by rebels in the central province of Homs, state media said Monday.

Two Russians, Viktor Gorelov and Abdel Sattar Hassu, and a Italian, Mario Belluomo, were taken hostage by rebels last December in a Christian-populated area between Homs and the coastal city of Tartus.

All the three kidnapped worked with Hmisho & Co steel mill.

Kidnapping has become rampant in Syria during the 22-month crisis, which has left more than 60,000 people dead.
