Egyptian president appoints former VP ambassador to Vatican

CAIRO, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi issued a decree Thursday appointing former vice president Mahmoud Mekki the country's ambassador to Vatican, the official news agency MENA reported.

Mekki, who was named as Morsi's deputy in August 2012, resigned late December after Egypt's new constitution was established.

"I realized that the nature of political work does not suit my professional side as a judge," Mekki, also deputy chairman of the Court of Appeal, said in a statement when he resigned.

He continued to chair a national dialogue between Egypt's presidency and political forces after his resignation, in an attempt to end growing divisions among Egyptians over Morsi's controversial decisions and the new constitution.
