Myanmar gov't announces unilateral ceasefire with KIA

YANGON, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar government Friday announced unilateral ceasefire with the ethnic Kachin Independence Army (KIA) , saying that the government troops will stop military offensive against the area of Lakyayan starting Jan. 19 at 06:00 a.m., according to a press release of the government aired by the state TV at night.

The unilateral ceasefire was offered as security with the government force members as well as with the Myitgyina-Bahmo highway have been in place, said the release.

The government forces will strictly follow the directives of the President by not opening fire on the other side except for self-defense, the release quoted the Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services as reiterating.

The release called on KIA commander to stop their forces from attacking the governemnt forces to reduce tension.

The release urged the KIA not to block and launch mine attacks on motor and rail roads used by the public in humanitarian consideration of the people suffering from the armed conflicts in terms of food shortage and high commodity prices, citing the area of Puta O.

For national reconsolidatiion and for eternal peace, the government would offer to hold political dialogue with the KIA, the release added.

According to the release, 35 government forces were killed with 190 other injured in an ambush by the KIA when the government troops sent food supplies to the area of Lakyayan.
