MOSCOW, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Russia put into service its new strategic nuclear submarine Yuri Dolgoruky on Thursday.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu attended the flag-raising ceremony in the northern naval base of Severodvinsk after the Defense Ministry signed the acceptance act on Dec. 29.

President Vladimir Putin is expected to address the submarine's crew via video in the nearby town of Severomorsk.

The fourth-generation Borei class ballistic missile nuclear submarine is one of eight major projects scheduled to be completed by 2020 to form the core of the Russian Navy's nuclear deterrence strategy over the coming decades.

Designed by the Rubin bureau in St. Petersburg, the submarine is 170 meters long and 13.5 meters wide, with a diving depth of 450 meters and a submerged speed of some 29 knots. Every ship has a crew of 107, including 55 officers, according to the RIA Novosti.

All Borei class strategic submarines carry up to 16 Bulava ballistic missiles with multiple warheads.
