NEW YORK, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- A ferry boat crashed into a pier in lower Manhattan, New York City on Wednesday morning, causing dozens of injuries, local media reported.
According to a CNN report, at least 23 people were injured in the accident, and the number could still go up.
Police sources said earlier that up to 50 or 60 people were injured, including one critical with head injuries.
TV footage on local news channels showed a dozen stretchers carrying the injured passengers on the scene, and a big hole in the front of the docked ferry.
The commuter ferry hit the dock while pulling into Pier 11 just before 9 a.m. EST, local media cited eyewitnesses as saying.
Most of the injuries occurred on the upper level, and one man apparently fell down the stairs, said the witnesses.
