ANKARA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- A total of 61 people were killed and 91 others injured in 80 mine accidents in Turkey in 2012, the semi- official Anatolia news agency reported Wednesday.
According to the Chamber of Mining Engineers of Turkey, 80 accidents took place at Turkish mines last year.
Explosions and cave-ins in mines are common in Turkey. Since 1955, 3,053 Turks have been killed and 326,208 others injured in mine accidents in the country.
On Monday, eight miners were killed in a blast triggered by the methane gas leakage in Kozlu town of northern Zonguldak province in Turkey.
