TEHRAN, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast reiterated on Tuesday the country's "full support" for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's recent peace plan for the Arab state.
Talking to reporters in his weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Mehmanparast said that Assad's plan can improve the situation in Syria, a day after he said the Islamic republic supports the Syrian president's Sunday remarks and his proposed peace plan.
During his speech to the nation on Sunday, Assad presented what he described as a new peace plan to end the crisis in Syria, a move that has been dismissed by his opponents as a ploy to cling on to power.
Assad offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution, but also demanded that other countries must first stop helping the armed rebels.
On Tuesday, the Iranian spokesman said that Iran's Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi will discuss important regional issues, including Syria's new developments, with the Egyptian officials in his upcoming visit to Egypt.
Salehi is scheduled to pay an official visit to Egypt on Wednesday.
