HOUSTON, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. president George H.W. Bush is recovering, but there is still no timetable for his release from a Houston hospital, Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath said Monday.

"President Bush's recovery is continuing at The Methodist Hospital, where in recent days he has taken great pride watching big football wins by Texas A&M and the Houston Texans," said a brief statement from spokesman Jim McGrath.

"While no immediate timeline has been set for the President's discharge, the Bushes wish to thank everyone for their many kind messages," the statement said.

Bush, 88, has been hospitalized since Nov. 23 with bronchitis. He was once put under intensive care with a liquids-only diet served, due to a worsening fever.

Monday's statement is the first word about the ex-president's condition since Dec. 30, when a statement was issued saying Bush had been moved out of intensive care.

Bush served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993.
