NATO service member killed in eastern Afghan attack

KABUL, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- A service member with the NATO-led coalition forces was killed in insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, the coalition confirmed in a press release.

"An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan today," the ISAF or coalition said in the press release.

In addition, the coalition forces also confirmed that an ISAF civilian employee was shot and killed by an Afghan woman dressed in Afghan police uniform earlier Monday.

"A contracted civilian employee of the International Security Assistance Force died after being shot by a woman wearing an Afghan police uniform in Kabul, Afghanistan today," the coalition said in a separate release. "The incident is currently under investigation,"

However, the local media earlier reported that the policewoman opened fire and killed an American police advisor inside Kabul police headquarters at about 10 a.m. (local time) and the motive behind the shooting was not known so far.

A total of 50 countries are contributing 100,000-strong forces in Afghanistan with over 68,000 of them American mainly stationed in the east and south, followed by 9,500 from UK mainly based in southern Afghanistan.

The latest casualties bring the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 498 so far this year.
