RAMALLAH, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked Wednesday for international assistance to bring Palestinian refugees in Syria back to the Palestinian territories, Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported.
Abbas urged UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to help in this matter "to spare the Palestinians the pains of the bloody conflict, " said the report.
Syrian jets bombed a Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus Tuesday for the second time. The Syrian army targeted the camp to drive out rebels who made their way into the camp to fight a Palestinian faction, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, which has taken sides with the Syrian government.
Most of the Palestinians stand by the rebels, who have been fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for more than 21 months.
On Sunday, eight Palestinians were killed in aerial bombing on the Yarmouk refugee camp in the south of the Syrian capital.
Abbas's call to bring the refugees back was symbolic, since Israel will not accept their return, the report said. The number of Palestinians in Syria is about half a million.
In recent hours, about 16,000 Palestinians fled the violence in Syria to neighboring Lebanon, said Samir al-Refa'i, the representative of the Palestinian Fatah party in Lebanon.
DAMASCUS, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Unrest-torn Syria witnessed fierce battles in the Yarmouk refugee camp in south Damascus on Tuesday as the international community pressed ahead with its efforts to end the country's violence.
Anwar Raja, spokesman of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinian General Command (PFLP-GC), confirmed on Tuesday that armed militia stormed the Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees and seized its control. Full story
