HOUSTON, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. president George H.W. Bush remains hospitalized Thursday but is becoming more physically active, doctors said.

Doctors are still not ready to discharge Bush from the Methodist Hospital in Houston where he has been in since Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough, according to the website of The Houston Chronicle.

The newspaper quoted hospital spokesman George Kovacik as reporting that Bush remains in stable condition Thursday.

Doctors are pleased with Bush's progress but are being cautious with his care and are not ready to send him home, said Kovacik.

Doctors also said the ailment of the 88-year-old former president is not life-threatening.

Bush served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993.
