TEHRAN, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The naval force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) downed an U. S. drone over the Persian Gulf in Iran's waters, the SepahNews affiliated to IRGC reported on Tuesday.
"The U.S. drone, which in the past days flied over the general (international) zone of Persian Gulf gathering intelligence, was trapped in the air defense and controlling systems of IRGC and was captured as soon as it entered Iran's airspace," SepahNews said.
The report did not specify the time when the drone was downed.
The commander of IRGC's Naval Force, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, said that the drone was the ScanEagle type which could take off from the big warships, according to the report.
Talking about the preparedness of the IRGC naval force, Fadavi said that "our condition is great and IRGC's naval preparedness is in the best ever condition."
On Nov. 9, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said that the fighter jet of the Islamic republic had confronted an U.S. drone in the Persian Gulf.
The U.S. Defense Department said earlier that an Iranian fighter jet had attacked an U.S. drone in the Persian Gulf, but missed its target. The U.S. unmanned aircraft did not suffer any damage and returned safely to the base.
The department officials said it was the first time that an U.S. unmanned aircraft had been shot at over international waters in the Persian Gulf.
The Iranian defense minister said that the U.S. drone had entered the country's sea space in the Persian Gulf.
The incident indicated that the Islamic republic watched every movement in the region carefully and would take effective and strong measures in due time, he added.
