RIYADH, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- A truck transporting fuel exploded Thursday morning in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, leaving 22 people killed, 111 wounded and three others missing, Saudi News Agency said.
The explosion took place in the eastern part of Riyadh when the driver hit an overpass on top of Sheikh Jaber road. The accident damaged several vehicles and nearby houses, according to the report.
The injured, including the driver, were referred to a nearby hospital.
Saudi Director General of Civil Defense, Lieutenant General Saad bin Abdullah Al-Tuwaijri, said the effects of the explosion reached as far as 300 meters after the tanker ran into the overpass, according to the agency.
He said that the fire has been controlled and that the tanker's driver is responsible for the accident, warning that the number of the injured might soar as onlookers are gathering around the fire where there is gas leakage.
He added that the nearby area will be cordoned off till Friday.
No further details were released about the nationalities of the dead.
