Japan's Sendai airport shut as explosive found near runway

TOKYO, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- All 92 domestic and international flights scheduled on Tuesday at Sendai Airport in northeastern Japan were cancelled after an dud shell was found at a construction site near its runaways, media reports quoted airport authorities as saying.

The U.S. military shell, 110 centimeters in length and 35 cm in diameter with a weight of 250 kilograms, was found Monday night about 1.2 kilometers west of the airport's building, according to reports.

It is rusty and believed to have been used during World War II, media said.

A worker found the shell at around 10:15 p.m. on Monday while drilling. The site was inundated by the powerful tsunami in March 2011.

Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force personnel will dispose of the shell later Tuesday, airport authorities said.
