DAMASCUS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Syria's state-media said Sunday that the armed groups have violated the truce for the third straight day, by opening fire on army checkpoints in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, as activists reported airstrikes by Syrian MIGs on rebel strongholds near the capital Damascus.
The Syrian troop's repulsed an attack by armed groups near al- Hamidieh roundabout in Deir al-Zour, killing three "terrorists" with one of them as a leading figure in al-Qaida terror network, the state-run SANA news agency said.
The army also repelled another attack by other armed groups that attacked several checkpoints in Deir al-Zour, SANA said, adding that a number of armed men have been killed.
On the opposition side, activists said that the Syrian troops carried out airstrikes by MIGs on the eastern Ghouta area on the outskirts of Damascus.
The Local Coordination Committees, an activists' network, also reported airstrikes on al-Mayadeen area in Deir al-Zour.
There has been no independent confirmation on the activists' account.
With the conflicting parties blaming each other, a workable cease-fire proposed by UN-Arab League joint special representative, Lakhdar Brahimi, have faded away. Brahimi's truce has been strained by consistent fighting between rebels and government forces.
Brahimi has been shuttling among regional countries to push for the truce during the four-day Eid al-Adha as a prelude for further pacification. However, the Muslim feast started on Friday and the violence continued unabatedly.
More than 20,000 people, mostly civilians, have reportedly died in Syria since the country's crisis began some 20 months ago. A further 2.5 million Syrians urgently need humanitarian aid, and over 340,000 have crossed the border to Syria's neighboring countries, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq, according to UN estimates.
MOSCOW, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian opposition has broken the cease-fire announced by the government during the Muslim holidays, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Saturday.
"Westerners again block the condemnation of terror attack in Damascus at the UN Security Council (UNSC), and the opposition breaks the truce. Its course toward continuing violence is obvious, " Gatilov said on his Twitter account.Full story
