UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The UN General Assembly on Thursday elected Argentina, Australia and Rwanda to the UN Security Council as non-permanent members to serve a two-year term beginning on Jan. 1, 2013.
Rwanda won 148 votes from the 193 UN member states in a secret ballot, Argentina 182 and Australia 140, according to Vuk Jeremic, the president of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
To be elected to the 15-member Security Council, a country must win 129 votes, or two-thirds of the General Assembly members.
The Security Council has five permanent members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- and 10 non- permanent members elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term.
