ATHENS, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Greeks on Thursday went on a general strike to protest against a new round of imminent austerity cuts designed to ride over the country's ongoing debt crisis.
The 24-hour strike and rallies organized by trade unions and opposition Left parties in central Athens will coincide with an European Union summit in Brussels where Prime Minister Samaras was due to discuss with international lenders the release of further bailout loans to the debt-ridden country.
Train, ferry services and flights are expected to be disrupted, while state companies and private stores will remain shut down, as protesters gather to denounce new spending cuts promoted in return for more aid to avoid a Greek default that could force Athens out of the eurozone.
