UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon is "appalled and deeply saddened" by the latest attack on peacekeepers in Darfur, said a statement released here by Ban's spokesperson on Tuesday.
The statement said that Ban urged the government of the Sudan to conduct a full investigation and to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. He also expressed his condolences to the government of Nigeria and to the families of the fallen peacekeepers and United Nations-African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a UNAMID patrol late Tuesday about 2 km away from their base in El Geneina town, the capital of West Darfur State, said a statement issue by UNAMID.
Four members of the Nigerian battalion were killed and eight others were injured. The reason behind the ambush is unknown, it said.
