BOGOTA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will undergo a prostate surgery at 0700 local time (1200 GMT) Wednesday at a local hospital to have a malignant tumor removed, his doctor said Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference in hospital Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota, oncologist Felipe Gomez said Santos would remain at the hospital after the surgery for two or three days to recover.

Gomez said Santos won't lose consciousness during the surgery which will be conducted with "anesthesia which only includes half of the body."

The doctor also said the first report on Santos' state of health and the surgery results will be issued around Wednesday noon.

"I think Santos will be 'disabled' just few days before he will be 100 percent able. Usually, after one week a patient is recovered and can travel three weeks later," Gomez said.

Colombian Senate President Roy Barreras expected a "quick solution" to Santos' health problem and said that he had no doubt the president would soon be "totally recovered."

Former President Alvaro Uribe also expressed his "best wishes for a successful surgery of President Santos" via his Twitter account.

Santos also received greetings from fellow Latin American leaders including counterparts of Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Venezuela.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group also wished Santos to get well soon and said they were confident that his disease would not affect the peace talks between them and the Colombian government due to begin on Oct. 15 in Oslo, Norway.
