MANILA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the jeep-truck collision Tuesday morning in northern Philippine province of Ilocos Norte rose to 12, police said.
According to Supt. Jovencio Badua Jr., spokesman for the regional police, the 12 people, mostly high school students, were declared dead on the spot while one was seriously injured when a passenger jeepney and a 14-wheeler truck collided in Sarrat town at around 7:30 a.m. local time.
The Solsona-Laoag jeep bound to Laoag City collided with a 14- wheeler truck, while overtaking along the national highway.
The driver of the truck surrendered to the police after the incident, while the driver of the jeepney was pronounced dead on arrival in a nearby hospital, Badua said.
A 12-year-old boy, the only survivor, is undergoing medical treatment in hospital, he said, adding that the police is conducting an in-depth investigation into the accident.
