DAMASCUS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua)-- Syrian troops repelled Saturday an attack waged by rebel armed militias in the northern province of Idlib, the state-run SANA news agency said.

Syrian troops responded to the attack by the armed militias who tried to attack a military checkpoint in al-Kornish street in Idlib, said SANA, adding that the confrontation led to the killing of one soldier.

It said the troops tracked down the assailants who tried to flee the area, killing and injuring many of them.

Separately, SANA said many gunmen have been killed during two " qualitative" operations carried out by the Syrian troops in al- Shaar district of northern Aleppo city.

Also in Aleppo, the Syrian troops destroyed Saturday 40 pickup trucks outfitted with DSHKA machine guns that belong to armed insurgents in Atareb area in the countryside of Aleppo.

The recent fighting is part of ongoing battles that have been raging on in a considerable number of Syrian cities.
