LONDON, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two female police officers were killed when they were trying to arrest a murder suspect in Manchester Tuesday morning.

Both officers were unarmed during the police operation in Tameside, when 29-year-old Dale Cregan, who had been suspected of two counts of murder, fired at them, according to the Greater Manchester Police.

An explosion and 13 gunshots were heard, witnesses said. One of the officers was immediately shot dead, while the other were sent to hospital but doctors failed to save her life.

"This is a heartbreaking time for the officers' families and colleagues, and our thoughts are with them," said Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan.

He added that they are currently working to inform the families of those officers.

Cregan was arrested soon after he walked into a police station in Tameside.
