MOGADISHU, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The election of new Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud on Monday has been recieved as the start of a fresh chapter in the country's history by residents of the capital Mogadishu as well as members of the international community.
President-elect Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud won the presidency with an overwhelming majority of the votes defeating outgoing president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed who received 79 votes against 190 for the country's new leader.
The civic activist and academic is seen as new breed of leaders coming to power in the war ravaged Horn of Africa nation following the similar landslide victory for the new speaker of the Somali parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari.
"This is a new beginning for our country. We hope the election of Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud will lead to a more stable and prosperous Somalia," Mude Aliyow, a Mogadishu resident told Xinhua.
The Somali capital is currently witnessing a period of stability following the withdrawal of the rebel fighters after conserved offensive by the Somali government forces backed troops of the African Union peacekeeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) last year.
The relative security in the seaside city made it possible for the holding of the presidential election and the National Constituent Assembly that endorsed the country's constitution early last month.
"We are pleased to see that a president has been elected within our capital and we hope to see more progress being made in many areas including security, and overall national development by the new government," Hajiyo Aasho, a mother said.
Members of the international community have congratulated the new president and welcomed his election as a "great step forward".
The African Union Mission in Somalia welcomed election of Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud as the new president of the first non- transitional government.
Deputy envoy of AU commission for Somalia, Wafula Wamunyinyi, congratulated the new president and the pledged the support of the African Union Commission and that of AMISOM.
The UN special envoy to Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, said in a statement, the election of the new president marked a "great step forward on the path to peace and prosperity".
"Somalia has proved the doubters wrong and sent a powerful message of progress to all of Africa and indeed to the entire world," Mahiga said in the statement after the election.
The United States congratulated the new president elect and his election "a crucial step forward" along the path of the nation's rebuilding.

MOGADISHU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Somalia's parliament speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari on Monday announced Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud as the country's new president after the academic won majority of votes.
Mohamoud won by a landslide as he secured 190 votes against the incumbent president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who made into the final round with a lead in the first round, with 79 votes in the run-off. Full story
