MOGADISHU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Somalia's parliament speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari on Monday announced Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud as the country's new president after the academic won majority of votes.

Mohamoud won by a landslide as he secured 190 votes against the incumbent president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who made into the final round with a lead in the first round, with 79 votes in the run-off.

The outgoing prime minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali and businessman Abdelkadir Osoble, who came in the third and fourth in the first round, opted out.

"I thank all the members of parliament both those who voted for me and those who vowed against me and I thank the Somali people as well as the international community for their support of Somalia," Mohamoud said in a speech after his victory.

Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed who ruled the war-torn country since 2009, said he accepted the results of the vote and will work with the new president.

Sheikh Ahmed said he is asking the heads of Somalia's armed forces, the intelligence and police to take their orders from the new president who also will be the Commander-In-Chief.

The election of the new Somali president marks the end of long drawn transitional period and heralds new era of a stable government for the war-ravaged horn of Africa nation, officials said.

Following the announcement of the result, Somali parliamentarians started singing the country's national anthem while intense celebratory gunfire was heard throughout Mogadishu.

Residents of the Somali capital Mogadishu expressed appreciation at the result. "I am really pleased that there is a change and we hope the country will even be much better and peace will prevail in Somalia," Maalin Yusuf, a Mogadishu resident told Xinhua.

Mohamed Jaama, another resident, welcomed the fact that the vote took place in Mogadishu after previous attempts at forming a government were carried out outside Somalia.

The new president, after he formally takes over power from outgoing leader, will have to name a new prime minister within 30 days and the new PM will in turn form a cabinet that will lead the country for the next four years.
