DAMASCUS, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of the blast that struck Syria's northern province of Aleppo overnight Sunday has climbed to 27, while the number of the wounded hit 64, according to the state-TV.
The blast rocked the Malaab al-Baladi area in Aleppo, a district grouping three hospitals and a school, sheltering displaced people. The state media said people have been buried under the piles of rubble and debris.
The state-TV aired live coverage of the site, showing scenes of carnage and huge destruction.
The Lebanese NBN TV, meanwhile, said the car bomb ripped through a military checkpoint in the same area.
Aleppo has emerged as a stage for pitch battles between the government troops and the armed rebels, who have pledged to keep fighting in Aleppo to subdue it under their control.
