DAMASCUS, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were killed and other 40 injured when an explosive-laden car went off in Syria 's northern province of Aleppo on Sunday evening, the state-run SANA news agency said.
The blast rocked the Malaab al-Baladi area, said SANA, while the state-TV aired live coverage of the blast site, showing huge destruction scenes.
The blast also occurred near a school harboring displaced people. One traumatized woman appeared in the video amid piles of debris shouting that she lost her son in the blast while several other people were surrounding her looking painfully to the scenes of carnage and destruction.
The TV said the blast area is surrounded by three hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese NBN TV said the car bomb ripped through a military checkpoint in the same area.
Aleppo has emerged as a stage for pitch battles between the government troops and the armed rebels, who have pledged to keep fighting in Aleppo to subdue it under their control.
