WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Washington D.C. area experienced severe weather on Saturday afternoon, with tornado warnings issued and heavy rains buffeting the region.
The Washington Post's Capital Weather unit reported a " confirmed tornado" headed toward Alexandria, Crystal City, Ballston, Woodrow Wilson Bridge and the National Airport.
Politico, an online news website, also said that a tornado warning was issued for northeast Washington until 4:30 p.m., affecting Beltsville, College Park and Greenbelt of Maryland.
Other reports said that a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until 4:30 p.m. in the region.
The Washington metropolitan area includes all of the District of Columbia, and parts of the U.S. states of Maryland and Virginia.
The region was hit by a severe storm in late June, which left thousands without electricity for days.
