9 security members killed in central Iraq

BAGHDAD, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nine security members were killed in separate attacks in central Iraq on Saturday evening, a local police source said.

An unidentified gunmen launched an attack on an army checkpoint in Balad city, some 80 km north of Baghdad, and gunned down seven soldiers and wounded six others in the evening, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a police officer was assassinated by assailants with silenced weapons near Fallujah, 50 km west of Baghdad, the source said.

Earlier in the evening, a car bomb rattled Baiji city, 200 km north of Baghdad, and injured seven civilians, he added.

Violence has been chronic in post-war Iraq as insurgents show stubbornness in continuous attacks to undermine the Shiite-led government and to discredit the nascent security forces.
