DAMASCUS, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Peter Maurer, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said Wednesday he will keep to discuss with the Syrian government the possibilities to expand his organization's work on protecting the Syrian civilians.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday after meeting with Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and the Health Minister Sa'ad al- Nayyef, Maurer said "I was discussing and I'm continuing to discuss with the Syrian government the possibilities to expand our operations in Syria."
"We have very constructive discussions and we will continue those discussions as you see at the present moment," he said.
Maurer arrived in Syria Monday for a three-day visit aimed to discuss the humanitarian situation in Syria with top Syrian officials, including the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who told Maurer Tuesday that his administration welcomes the humanitarian efforts of ICRC "so long as it carries out its work independently with evenhandedness."
