DAMASCUS, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- As many as 44 armed insurgents were killed and 16 others injured Wednesday during clashes between armed groups and government troops in Syria's central Homs province, the pro-government Sham FM radio reported.
The clashes took place between the districts of Bab Houd and Bab Turkman in Homs, said the report, adding that armed groups at al-Ghasanieh district in Homs are firing rocket-propelled grenades at civilians.
The state TV said five people were killed and 17 others injured in the armed groups' attack on al-Ghasanieh.
The incidents came as clashes between government troops and armed rebels are ongoing at the southern suburbs of the capital Damascus.
The sound of sporadic shellfire has been reverberating through Damascus since Tuesday night.
