BOGOTA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Griselda Blanco, a Colombian drug trafficker known as the "Queen of cocaine," was killed by gunmen in the north-central city of Medellin, authorities said Tuesday.
Police said Blanco was shot in the head by two armed men riding a motorcycle in front of a butcher shop on Monday. She died on her way to hospital.
The identity of the suspects and their motives were still under investigation, police said.
Blanco, 69, also known as "The Godmother," became a powerful drug smuggler in the 1970s by starting a massive drug trade to the United States.
Blanco returned to Colombia in 2004 after spending almost 20 years in a U.S. jail for drug trafficking and three drug-related killings. And she was the mentor of Pablo Escobar, Colombia's number one drug dealer who later took over her position.
