KIEV, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Monday called for more efforts to promote press freedom in his country.

"The main task of the government in the media sphere is to create conditions in which free press can develop freely and be independent of any kind of control," Yanukovych said in an opening speech to the annual 64th World Newspaper Congress here.

Yanukovych told over 1,000 participants that the sustainable development of free media space and the media market in Ukraine remains one of the priorities of the state policy.

Ukrainian media has no forbidden topics, Yanukovych said, adding that in the near future, the government will create favorable economic conditions for the media market.

The 64th World Newspaper Congress, along with the 19th World Editors Forum kicked off on Monday afternoon, gathering around 1,200 delegates from international media.

The event, aimed at improving the information flow between Ukraine and the rest of the world, will last till Sept. 5.
