Earthquake jolts 6 cities in S. Philippines

MANILA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The magnitude 5.9 earthquake off the Moro Gulf in Mindanao was also felt in six cities in southern Philippines, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said intensity 4 was felt in Cotabato City while intensity 3 was recorded in the municipalities of Datu Unsay and Datu Hoffer in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao.

Meanwhile, intensity 2 was felt in Zamboanga City, Kidapawan City, and Isulan in Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected following the earthquake which was tectonic in origin. The earthquake struck at 2:49 p.m. Monday.

The U.S. Geological Survey later changed the quake magnitude to 5.8, with its epicenter at a depth of 8.40 km.

No casualties and losses have been reported so far.
