DAMASCUS, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Visiting head of Iran's national security commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi met Sunday here with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his deputy Farouq al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.
Boroujerdi flew in a day earlier for a two day visit.
The details about the talks were not immediately available to the media, but apparently have touched upon the Iranian new initiative on Syria, which will be discussed at the upcoming Non- Aligned Movement (NAM) summit set to start at the end of this month.
The meeting with the Iranian delegation meanwhile marked al- Sharaa's first public appearance after rumors about his defection.
The vice president was seen Sunday leaving his car and entering his office in the capital Damascus before his meeting with Boroujerdi.
Syria's state TV has repeatedly denied the defection reports. However, al-Sharaa did not appear in person to refute the claims for himself, which has triggered the media outlets to further exaggerate, baselessly providing narrations about his alleged escape.
